Electronics

We now have a new radar, chartplotter, & two radios.  More details to follow.

The installer quoted a price and then presented a bill based on time.  I am ticked.

January 8, 2011

Okay, so I got over it. The work was good.  And he went the extra mile.  Most of the extra $$ went to wires and all the stuff that makes everything work together.  Once we get our other refurbishing done we will take the boat to Naples Dock and the installer will check out his work.  We have AIS and he needs other boats with AIS capabilities to check it all out.  Unfortunately we are at a marine in Goodland, FL and there is NO wifi, no 3G.

March 8, 2011

Rusty decided to replace the radio and I don't blame him.  The Jensen is a good brand but it would fade in and out.  Then there is the issue of storage for our CD's.  Who wants to bring their collection of CD's on the boat?  Rusty had most of the CD's loaded onto his IPOD and wouldn't you know it there just happened to be the perfect radio to hook up with an IPOD.  Or rather the IPOD hooks up with the radio.  The brand is a Fusion, the price was right, and our electronics guy came to the boat to install it.  He really is good and I didn't even squawk about the bill.  I think I'm either resigned or have realized that NOTHING is straightforward on a boat.  Nothing.  At all.

The Canvas and the Windshield

We are not the first to have a full canvas enclosure for the flybridge and we are not the first to have our windshield replaced.  So we go to the experts and they provide us with choices and caveats.  Acrylic or polycarbonate?  1/4" or 3/8".  Oh and by the way we'll probably have to let the supports make the bend in the windshield.   It's called a cold form or something like that.  However there is a question about the supports being adequate for such bending of plastic.

The members of the Monk36 Association on Yahoo have been helpful with their suggestions and insights.  One of the members sent photographs and some explanation on his setup.  So I've forwarded it to the canvas company in case it will help.  The tentative date for installation of the canvas works is January 2011.

Dec 28 - The canvas company will supply and form the 1/4" polycarbonate (lexan) windshield in conjunction with the installation of the canvas.  Dealing with one company will be so much easier.

March 10, 2011 - The canvas has been up for about a week.  The end result exceeded out expectations.  The workmanship is outstanding. The Monk36 has a forestay that cuts the space on the aft flybridge.  The canvas installer came up with the idea to split the forestays to two stays that hook to the side of the bimini structure.  We still have the forestay in case of emergencies but it is stored in a pocket in the ceiling of the canvas.  How ingenious is that?
